Memory Lanes
Not much going on so I'll reminisce. In my freshman high school Spanish class one assignment was to do a report on a foreign country. I'm not sure if it was just to report facts about the country or create a fictional visit there. Either way it was obviously to be written in Spanish, but we also were to draw the flag of that country on a poster board as part of the presentation. Well I chose Scotland since I was a fan of them in the FIFA video games. For the flag I colored it purple instead of blue only because the soccer team wore purple. I think I knew it was supposed to be blue and wanted to make it blue, but went ahead with purple anyway since I guess I convinced myself that the uniforms were the correct color for the flag. This was before easy access to internet for us ('98), so I couldn't just do a quick google search (or Ask Jeeves as it were at the time) to look it up. But I'm pretty sure I used our old encyclopedias we had for research for this project, so I should have seen the blue flag. So when it was my turn to present my report my teacher saw my flag and was like "Is that fuchsia?" I don't think she told me it was the wrong color but it was just funny the way she asked me that. I don't even know how I responded but I knew I was wrong. I think we put the flags up too, but nobody said anything to me about it. I just remember being embarrassed for myself just thinking how stupid I was. Oh well, that's just what I do.
In my first real job after college, which I moved to South Carolina for, my coworker would say "How 'bout it?" to me and I didn't know what to say. It took me a few times to realize that was just his way of saying "What's up" or "How's it going" or "Hey", etc. I think the first time I was like "How about what?" I don't even remember his response or how I finally realized that's all that was, but I do know it took a few times before I got it. That was new to me. I guess that was a Southern thing. It took me a while to get used to "Southern" slang and the accent, but I did feel out of place for a while. Embarrassing myself is just a thing I do.
I feel your pain! When I worked in rural Virginia people would always greet me with "Whatcha say Sheem?"... I would just repsond with "Not much....". I had no idea what to say and I didn't wanna ask. Eventually I learned it was a way to say hi and a way to ask about whats going on in the news.
