Faux Pas

I was doing more training with another coworker I just met today and he said he was soon going to be transferring to our company's Phoenix office because his fiance got a job there. After talking for a bit I asked a question about his "wife" and he started using "he" to refer to them and in my head I'm like "oops, I thought for sure he said he had a wife". I didn't remember if he actually mentioned a wife or something else. Of course I didn't catch any of what he was saying since that just threw me off. Later on he did say "fiance" and I'm like "oh, that's what he must have said initially...my bad". That must've been so awkward for him to hear me say that and try to answer with the switch up. He didn't correct me and I didn't apologize or correct myself, so it made it really awkward going forward in our conversations. I felt bad for assuming things, but I swear I'm not a homophobe. I don't judge. Love who you love, be who you be, live and let live. It's none of my business. They really need a new word to differentiate between male and female fiance. Sorry bro, I'll be more careful not to assume things 😬.
